Hi, my name is Maria and I'm a mathematician. Today, I'm going to show you a way to write numbers that shows the value of each digit. So, if I have the number 1453, what I need to know first is all my places. My 3 is in the ones place, my 5 is in the tens place, my 4 is in the hundreds place, and my 1 is in the thousands place. Now, what I'm going to do is, starting with the largest value, the thousands place, I'm going to rewrite the number 1 as 1000 because that one signifies 1,000. Now, I'm going to put a plus sign in between each of these operations. There are 4 hundreds, so what I'm going to do is express this digit right here as 400. Plus 5 is the tens digit, so that means it represents five tens which is 50. And lastly, I have just three ones, so that's just going to be represented as 3. If you go ahead and check, this one thousand plus 400 is one thousand four hundred. Plus 50 is 1450. And plus 3 is 1453. So, what I've done is take this number and expanded it to show the value of each of the digits. So, 3 is in the ones digit, that's just one three. Five was in the tens digit, I made it times 10. 4 is in the hundreds, so I wrote it as four hundred. And 1 is in the thousands, so I wrote it as a thousand. That's how you expand the number and write it to show the value of each digit.
