So many people are over-consuming high fructose corn syrup, processed sugar, and carbs in general. I'm going to go over my top five natural sweeteners that are easier for your body to digest and process, and that bring the most health benefits. Whether you're looking for sugar substitutes for baking, cooking, or adding to your morning tea or smoothie, these are the best five natural sweeteners you can use. To start with, my number one natural sweetener is pure raw honey. When buying honey, look for raw and ideally from a local source. Honey is not just sugar, it also contains amino acids, electrolytes, antioxidants, and antimicrobial compounds that support your body's health. Use honey sparingly, about one to two tablespoons daily. Honey has additional benefits, such as reducing allergy symptoms by helping your body adapt to local pollen. However, many supermarket honeys don't contain any pollen, so it's important to buy raw honey for the real deal. Raw honey also has antimicrobial properties and can be used topically for wounds or skin issues. Some of my favorite ways to use honey are in morning oatmeal, breakfast smoothies, gluten-free pancakes, and green tea for a touch of sweetness. It's my most used sweetener. The second sweetener to consider, especially if you have blood sugar issues, are overweight, or have diabetes, is stevia. Stevia is a no-calorie, all-natural sweetener that comes from a leaf of a flowering plant. Look for full green leaf stevia or powdered stevia.
