The process is relatively quick, taking about six months. During that time, the new immigrant will receive a work permit, a Social Security card, and a driver's license – everything they need to live in the United States. At the end of the six months, there is an interview conducted by immigration officials. The purpose of the interview is to ensure that the applicant has never committed a crime, defrauded the American government, been deported, or has any serious diseases like AIDS. Furthermore, they also want to confirm that the marriage is genuine and not just a convenience marriage, as that would be illegal. If such a fraudulent marriage is discovered, it can have severe consequences for the immigrant, as it will result in a permanent mark on their record that will prevent them from obtaining a green card.
