Now, California has four types of basic partnerships available: limited partnership, general partnership, limited liability partnership, and sole proprietorship. Sole proprietorships, I'm not going to go into too much, it's basically saying if you're Joe Nick person and you want to open Joe's Burger Shack, that would be a sole proprietorship, small-scale stuff. And you actually, as it turns out, don't have to file anything with the Secretary of State at all, so let's forget about that. But if you're forming one of the other partnerships, there's a few steps you will have to go through to get it formed in the eyes of the state. Not too many, fortunately. First of all, before getting ahead of yourself at all, as this paragraph says here, you're going to want to make sure that the name you plan on using is available and has been reserved. Now, you can do a quick search by going to the business search page within the Secretary of State's website, where you just type in a name and it shows you everything that matches it. It's not official and it's not guaranteed in any way, so say there's some system glitch or you there's a typo or something, you know, the site may display the name your desired name is being available when in fact it is not. So, in order to guarantee it's available, as you can see, be or the name reservation page, all you have to do is send in a letter of a name available availability and query letter, and there's more information on that there, but basically, that's an official request to see if a name is available or not.
