Welcome to the lesson on summarizing. After completing this lesson, you will be able to define summary, list the steps for creating a summary, and create a sample summary. Aishah has spent the afternoon reading the encyclopedia her grandma gifted her. She is very excited because she has read some interesting facts about the Sun. Grandma is delighted to hear this and asks Aishah to give her a summary of what she read. However, Aishah is unsure about forming a summary as the passage on the Sun is rather long. Grandma tells Aishah not to worry and decides to help her summarize it. "Come on, let us learn all about summarizing!" Summarizing is an important studying skill. It is a shortened version of a passage written in one's own words. A summary always covers the essential points of the original passage. It presents large chunks of information in short, cohesive sentences. A summary can be used to sum up information, present information concisely, state the main or essential points without any detailed explanations, refer to a body of work, or give examples of several points of view on one subject. Let us take a look at the guidelines for summarizing a passage. They are as follows: 1. Read the passage. 2. Make a note of key words, main points or arguments, and topic sentences. 3. Try to form a brief outline of the passage. 4. Use the outline to form a summary of the passage. However, use your own language to convey the ideas. 5. Use some key words in the summary and give a title accordingly. 6. Avoid technical language and write in simple and understandable English. 7. The summary must be objective and written in the third person. 8. Illustrations, examples, quotations, etc. can be omitted. 9. Replace long phrases with single words and use participial clauses instead of full...
