Hello, today I'd like to take you through the process of upgrading the Cisco IP phone software image on a Cisco Unified Communications Manager server. For this example, we're going to be upgrading the Cisco 79-65 skinny IP Phone. So, let's take a look at what software version the phones are currently running. To do this, we go to the Cisco Unified Communications Manager CM administration page. You need to log in with your application user ID and then navigate to device device settings and device defaults. This will bring up a list of the different device types and the default load information for each one. Scroll down to the 79-65 skinny version, and you'll see that these phones are currently using load version 842, which is a release from November 2008 and about a year old. Now, let's go ahead and get a new image for it. In order to get a new phone load image, we need to go to Cisco's website. So, let's go there and log in. Once you're logged in, go to /go/software/voice-and-unified-communications/IP-telephony/IP-phones/7900-series-phones. Now, we're interested in the skinny version of the 7965G phone. The latest release is 853. It's important to note that older releases are also available under "all releases," and this may be necessary depending on how old your phone is. However, in this case, we're interested in 853, so we're going to download that. We want the sgn version, as that's the one we'll be installing on the Unified Communications Manager server. In the download card, there is a "proceed with download" button, but there is also a readme link. Click on the readme link, and then minimize the window for now. We'll need that later on.
